Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Attention Feedback Awareness and Control Training (A-FACT) designed to improve the limitations of Attention Bias Modification Training (ABMT). A total of 60 participants with social anxiety symptoms were randomly assigned to either the ABMT group(N=30) or the A-FACT group(N=30). The healthy group (N=30) also participated in the experiment. The effects of ABMT and A-FACT were measured by changes in attention bias scores (ABS), social anxiety symptom scales (SADS, SIAS, SPS), Scale for Dispositional Self-focused Attention in Social situation (SDSAS), and state anxiety scales before and after training. The results showed that the attention bias scores of both ABMT and A-FACT groups were not different from those of the healthy group at post-test. Furthermore, both ABMT and A-FACT groups showed a significant decrease in social anxiety symptom scores before and after training, suggesting that attention bias modification, regardless of the feedback, are effective in reducing social anxiety symptoms. However, there was no significant group difference between ABMT and A-FACT in reducing social anxiety symptoms. In addition, the mediating effect of maladaptive self-focused attention in the relationships between ABMT and A-FACT trainings and social anxiety symptoms was not significant. Finally, the significance and limitations of this study were discussed.
